STING with NOVA line-array system

On 03 July 2011 the world-famous singer "Sting" and the American trumpeter and composer, "Chris Botti" visited the Georgian city of Batumi on the Black Sea for one of the most important open-air events of the country. Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili took the two superstars together with the Georgian National Symphony orchestra to Batumi.

The British rock musician, singer and bassist Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, better known as STING, thrilled the fans with his legendary songs. The famous Piazza Square in Batumi is one of the hottest venues for events in the country. The ambience of the Piazza Square with the magnificent buildings gave the event an exclusive feeling. Several thousand visitors and high-level VIPs from the Caucasus region have listened not only to their superstars live on stage, but enjoyed their music also by a special sound system: NOVA ATLAS AT-1 from Craaft Audio GmbH. STING was not the first big act using the NOVA system at Piazza Square. In the past 6 months, for example, Plácido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli and Buena Vista Social Club have used the NOVA line array system, too.

Since the venue is surrounded by numerous buildings, it is not easy to create good sound at such a location. For Harry Pillmayer, the system engineer of the event and director of the touring service "Bühnenfabrik" and Falk Gruber, the production manager of the construction firm “THS Media” from St. Ingbert, the planning was really difficult: Mega-star in a difficult environment, perfect sound for large audiences and first-rated representatives from the government! "The perfect functionality of a line-array system is tremendously important. Absolutely precise radiation of a system is mandatory here. Finally, it was the object to deliver the sound to the audience only, since we had expected tremendous reflections from the surrounded buildings." said Pillmayer. The 70-strong Georgian state orchestra with more than 80 open mics, the rock band of the trumpeter Chris Botti and also the exclusive musicians of Sting made the job not easier.

Production manager Falk Gruber uses the AT-1 line array module for this size of events for more than a year ago on. Gruber equips many major European events and said not without pride, that he used the ATLAS AT-1 as first company in Georgia. "We have decided for the NOVA AT-1 for different reasons. Not only technical data and prices were important. We chose for a system, which has convinced us in the sum of all the properties. NOVA offered us a complete solution including amping, controlling and aiming software that convinced us." said Harry Pillmayer. The headquarter of our company is located in Germany, not far from the factory of NOVA and Craaft Audio GmbH. "This helped us to find a close cooperation and communication with the manufacturer directly." NOVA offered here all the support and created a professional configuration.

The main system for the Piazza Square consists of a total of 24 NOVA AT-1 tops and 24 NOVA AB-1 subwoofers. "Most of manufacturers often recommend a split 2:1, means 2 tops for 1 sub. Due to the truly extraordinary power of the AT-1 we planned one double 18-inch subwoofer for one top. Each AT-1 is equipped with two 12-inch speakers, so the array produces a lot of bass already. But it includes also two additional 10-inch speakers, which are coupled via a double phase-plug and work to a midrange horn. This enables huge sound pressure in the midrange and so we call it horn-loaded line array." Three high drivers with a 1.75" voice coil each are integrated for the high frequency range. We used 12 pieces of AT-1 per side with 90 degree horizontal dispersion. The dimensions of the stage (width: 32 meters and height 14 meters) made such a configuration necessary, "said Falk Gruber. The system was driven by NOVA DXP amplifiers. The front system delivers a total power of 96.000 watts RMS. We have used digital controllers from NOVA with 6 pieces DC8000 matrix units, each with 4 inputs and 8 outputs, divided into eight racks. The controllers provide 24 inputs and 48 outputs to the system. "As we work with digital mixing consoles, we were able to stay on digital AES / EBU level. The DC8000 processes digital signals directly without loss or latency of AD/DA converters." said Pillmayer.

For the different sizes of events different presets are used. Depending on the size and required "throw" we simply load the needed preset into the controller. "This takes a few seconds only and the whole system is adapted to the size of the event." said Harry Pillmayer. "The preset with the widest reach offers a throw of more than 120 meters. With it, even really big events sound professional without any delay lines. For smaller events we load simply a different preset, which is adapted to the size the area."

The simulation software allows not only a professional planning of the system. "Every corner, every pin and every detail is included in the calculation here. We can say in the planning phase, for example, exactly which flight points are hung with which load. We are really surprised of the accuracy of the calculation always again. Directivity and sound pressure, compared to the simulation with reality by using precise measurements, one can speak of a planning tool. The AT-1 delivers exactly what is planned and is therefore very predictable. If you talk to the sound engineers of Sting, Placido Domingo or Andrea Bocelli: The NOVA AT-1 system does not need to be defended. Five-minute introduction to the system and the responsible technicians were of one opinion: WELL DONE - ACCEPTED ".

In the next few years many more top acts will visit the location on the Black Sea for concerts. In August 2011 Macy Gray and Enrique Iglesias (as part of his world tour) are expected to work with the NOVA AT-1 system.

Fixed installation in sports-arena with NOVA sound systems

The “Buchbinder Legionäre” are record holder in the 1st German Baseball-Bundesliga. The president Armin Zimmermann decided early 2011 to invest in a new sound system for the entire “Armin-Wolf-Baseball-Arena” in the Bavarian city of Regensburg. Zimmermann opted for the company "Pro-Event GmbH" as a local partner for planning and implementing the entire project. The installation of all speakers and components was finished end of March 2011. The stands were equipped with NM-1 NOVA speakers, as these have huge advantages in the dispersion through the coaxial speakers inside. Further NOVA speakers and amplifiers have been installed in the whole arena, too.

Daniel Forster (managing director, Pro-Event GmbH) about the project

"In this project we have opted for NOVA components from Craaft Audio. In the past it has been shown that the systems can master the most difficult situations. In this case, a special version of the NM-1 series was necessary. The speakers in the Armin-Wolf-Arena are influenced permanently by extremely bad weather conditions. Together with the company Craaft Audio, we have planned the weather-proofed special construction of the NM-1 speakers. Already 4 weeks after placing the order the sound system was delivered and installed in the arena. Armin Zimmermann (president of Legionäre Baseball AG) is

enthusiastic about the sound quality and sound distribution throughout the spectator area of the stadium. We wish the " Buchbinder Legionäre " (German Champion, 1st Bundesliga) a successful 2011 season and the fans many exciting home games with the best of NOVA listening pleasure."
